Lynne Cheek said... Once we had the go ahead to fly (due to cloud in Milford Sound) we took off on our 9 seater plane with Southern Alps Air. Flying over Lake Wanaka gave us a glorious view of the whole lake. We soon were over snow capped mountain peaks, glaciers, valleys, lakes and rivers, the views were outstanding…we could see range after range of the Southern Alps and Mt Aspiring standing guard.
Henry, our pilot gave us a great commentary pointing out the names of the mountains, lakes and valleys as we passed, giving us a little history along the way. As we dropped down through Milford Sound to land we realised just how small we were in comparison to the giant mountains around us.
The Cruise on the Milford Sound (with Southern Discoveries) was stunning! The sun shone, there were some atmospheric clouds. Mitre Peak welcoming us into the fjord with what seemed like vertical walls of rock. The waterfalls dropped majestically from great heights and we even saw dolphins swimming along the cliff edges.
The return flight (via a different route) was fabulous too!
