The West Coast Wildlife Centre is an all weather visitor attraction located in Franz Josef, presenting rare Kiwi in an authentic environment.
The West Coast Wildlife Centre is an all weather visitor attraction located in Franz Josef.
The centre is the sole provider of the BNZ Operation Nest Egg TM incubation and captive rearing programme for the Rowi and Haast tokoeka, New Zealand's rarest Kiwi.
The forest and bush around the West Coast is dense and virtually completely untouched and the undergrowth is home to incredible wildlife, - much of which is rarely seen as it is often only active at night.
The superb quality nature films and interactives at the West Coast Wildlife Centre bring you the very special opportunity to view Juvenile Rowi - our rarest kiwi - in a natural walk through Nocturnal House setting with this fabulous wildlife New Zealand tour.
The West Coast Wildlife Centre is one of the largest Kiwi Captive Rearing facilities in New Zealand and since opening in 2010 has successfully raised and released 180 Kiwi Chicks.
The Centre also brings to life the yarns and tales of the people of the West Coast; who mined, hunted, struggled and lived in this breathtaking but harsh environment.

Excellent visit of 1.5h on a super rainy day in Franz Josef (we were about the only tourists in town). Lovely staff and kiwi's. The glacier exhibition is a nice bonus. There's no time slot for bookme tickets; you can show up anywhere during the day you booked your ticket for.
Thanks for the 5-star review and delighted that you enjoyed your visit. Good to point out that you can visit anytime during the day and use your Book Me ticket for the indoor attraction only. Really appreciate you taking the time to place a review.
We were pleasantly surprised by this. It felt a bit like a small, local museum with interesting information about much more than the kiwi. The tuatara were a bonus too. A enriching way to pass time on a rainy day.
Nice staff and kind of interesting videos. That’s where it ends. Took us 5 minutes to walk through. Tourists who just want to see a live kiwi will see one. But the price you pay for the privilege is a total rip off. If you’re going to Christchurch, see numerous kiwi as well as other animals at Willowbank for less money and more fun.
Thank you Nic for placing a review and disappointed of course by your comments.Clearly seeing highly endangered NZ Wildlife was not for you.You may have missed the fact that we are the largest kiwi incubation and hatching facility in the South Island and have helped bring the worlds rarest kiwi back from the very edge of extinction.Perhaps you missed our glacier attraction,West Coast wildlife films,,storytelling area sand VIP Backstage Pass Tours ?. You do need to take your time when you spend time with us as the more you put into the attraction the more you will get out of it - just like life really.
I wasn't expecting much and I wasn't disappointed. You can spend around a half hour here and it's done. Managed to see both kiwis though and read all the info but there really isn't much to this at all. If my money helps conservation then I'm all for that Gift shop had some nice stuff reasonably priced.

A place that you can see kiwi
The center is not a big one but you will get a chance to see kiwi moving around. Staff are very friendly though.
